Film Festivals and Awards History

The Northern Film School appreciates the importance of student work being distributed through film festivals worldwide, and we therefore support and fund a number of student films each year in submission to film festivals. We also believe that students should attend film festivals both to see work and to network with fellow filmmakers, commissioners and distributors and so we also offer the opportunity for students to apply for funding to attend both local festivals, such as Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival and Bite the Mango, as well as international and European Film Festivals.

Every year the staff selects a programme of best student shorts to be profiled at Leeds International Film Festival and as a member of NAHEMI, we regularly participate in the Eat our Shorts programme and other affiliate film festivals and events. As members of CILECT, the School participates in a number of affiliate film festivals across the world.

Students on the MA Film and Moving Image Production course participate annually in the Student Kodak Commercial Awards and in 2008 our winning team was invited to the award ceremony and dinner at BAFTA.

The EPIC Award (Electric Press Initial Career) is a prize of £ 10,000 given annually to a team of filmmakers who have graduated within the last three years from the Northern Film School.

The BA offers the Michael McNally prize of £ 500 each year, to individual students, reflecting our belief in their creative talent and academic excellence.
